Kanye is doing a Book!

From This Is Lavie

Kanye is doing a book!

Apparently Kanye West is working with Rizzoli on a new book, tentatively scheduled for an October 2009 release. Kanye West: Glow in the Dark will chronicle Kanye’s journeys around the world as he tours and hits up fashion parties. The book will come with a USB drive of previously unreleased music and will cost $50

The Orgins Of Rap And Hip Hop Music

From Urban Fiction

The impoverished of Kingston, Jamaica gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ’s comments weren’t as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.

During the late sixties, reggae wasn’t popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who’d been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.

Herc’s DJ style caught on. His party’s grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dancehall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.

Others copied Herc’s style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.

One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it

OMG, what a sunset

How Old is Akon?

From HighBrid Nation

Wikipedia says he was born in St Louis, US. So why doesnt he know how old he is. Methinks someone is a little nervous about their age.

This shit is crazy as hell. I know this guys age has been in question in past years but now this kid has came out and said that he doesn’t know his age and doesn’t want to. According to him he’s not sure if his birth certificate is authentic. He was saying he was 25 a couple years ago but his certificate would make him like 31. I say 38!

The World's Funniest Passenger Complaint Letter

The World's Funniest Passenger Complaint Letter
From Telegraph

This guy sent a complaint letter to Richard Branson about an in-flight meal.I laughed till I cried when I read this, no kidding...

Richie himself phoned the guy afterwards, so I suspect he had a titter or 2 also.

I imagine the same questions are racing through your brilliant mind as were racing through mine on that fateful day. What is this? Why have I been given it? What have I done to deserve this? And, which one is the starter, which one is the desert?
You don’t get to a position like yours Richard with anything less than a generous sprinkling of observational power so I KNOW you will have spotted the tomato next to the two yellow shafts of sponge on the left. Yes, it’s next to the sponge shaft without the green paste. That’s got to be the clue hasn’t it. No sane person would serve a desert with a tomato would they. Well answer me this Richard, what sort of animal would serve a desert with peas in: [see image 2, above].

Nuyorican - New York Puerto Rican

From Wikipedia

Just added the google hot gadget to this page, and this term came up as being on fire, so checked it out on Wikipedia. Interesting....

Nuyorican is a blending of the terms "New York" and "Puerto Rican" and refers to the members or culture of the Puerto Rican diaspora located in or around New York State especially the New York City metropolitan area with a major hub of over 500,000 Puerto Ricans living in Northern New Jersey, or of their descendants (especially those raised or still living in the New York area). The term is also used by Boricuas (Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico) to differentiate those of Puerto Rican descent from the Puerto Rico-born. The term Nuyorican is also sometimes used to refer to the Spanish spoken by New York Puerto Ricans. An estimated 800,000 Nuyoricans are said to live in New York city, the largest Puerto Rican community outside Puerto Rico. Nuyoricans are not considered Puerto Ricans by Boricuas due to cultural differences

Diddy To Produce Joaquin Phoenix Rap Album?

From Cinema Blend

Hmmmmmm......Give him one thing, this guy can sure grow a beard...What about a Grizzly Adams remake?

Sometimes an idea will look bad on paper and magically come together, surprisingly everyone with its success outside of those who envisioned the bizarre notion. I’m really not sure this is one of those ideas. In fact, a Joaquin Phoenix rap album produced by P Diddy is beyond just a normal bad idea. It’s a terrible idea. It’s the Bay Of Pigs, Britney getting married to that random dude for about five minutes, a crack addict having more children. But I’ve been wrong before

Death Row back catalogue up for sale again

From New York Daily News

Would you want Suge Knight on your case?

Some people don't want to go near the catalogue because they think Suge still believes it's his." Lydia Harris, who helped found Death Row, recalls Knight's anger when a judge awarded her a $107 million default settlement after she sued Knight. At a Jan. 10, 2007, court hearing, she says, Knight told her, "You dead, bitch."

Lupe says 'Hip-Hip coming to an end'

From xxlmag

“Not ‘end’ in the since of cease to exist,” he clarified. “But more so transform into something else so expression is more meaningful…I put question marks on it because I still question my own thoughts about the feeling. But so many “what the fuck?!?!” moments have piled up so incredibly over the last few years that it begs a rethink of the trajectory of the art form.

As far as who the next generation he is speaking of, Lupe listed the Cool Kids and Charles Hamilton in that category. “I’m a ‘new nigga’ but old in the senses of the fast food generation…. the ‘new new niggas’ i.e. The Cool Kids, the incredibly interesting and though provoking Charles Hamilton and the like are the vanguard I speak of…honestly I want it to change…never really been a fan of preserving…attention span is way too low and distorted for that hahaha.”

Watched this film last night....

Brad Pitt, plays the hero mountain climber, a decorated Nazi Stormtrooper and member of the SS, who really doesnt give a monkeys about anyone, and in fact leaves his pregnant wife to seek more glory on his next climb.

Not the greatest film in the world I would say, but the screnery is awe inspiring, and the moments with the Dalai Lama on screen are moving. Good movie...and definitely an interesting and true story. May actually buy the book...

LUPE FIASCO @ THE ENMORE THEATRE REVIEW

Jesse has done a review of Lupes gig

It has to be said Lupe Fiasco well and truly blew my doo rag off. Credit where credit's due it was much largely thanks to Mr.Fiasco's virgin tight six piece band who took their own brand of pop infused acid jazz to another echelon ending EVERY track with !!!'esque dread lock unravelling pysch out jams, which as you would've guessed went down extremely well with me and my purple tie-dye top.

Lupe Fiasco will become 'Percival Fats'

Despite many denials, the rumour is that Lupe Fiasco will take on a metamorphosis into someone called 'Percival Fats' and be a member of a band called Japanese Cartoon.

Will there also be a physical transformation into a musical lard-arse...hehe. And will that be on YouTube also?

From The Boom Box

A blog post on the band's MySpace profile, however, claims that "Percival Fats (Born Percival Hindenburg-Fats) Is not Lupe Fiasco (Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco). Although, he is a dear friend." The post continues, "Lupe does finance the band but is not, I repeat, not the singer in Japanese Cartoon. He is however the producer and we value his participation very much."

Lupe has a new DVD coming out in March, and claims that his upcoming album will be his last as a solo rapper.

former Rap-A-Lot Records signees, Big Pimp and G Stacka, known to many as, Dirty, announced plans to release their new LP entitled "Married to the Game" this March in conjunction with Koch and the Atlanta based record label, 404 Entertainment. Chinese Get Down with Hip-Hop

From marks china blog

“Hip-hop is free, like rock ’n’ roll — we can talk about our lives, what we’re thinking about, what we feel,” said Wang Liang, 25, a popular hip-hop D.J. in China who is known as Wordy. “The Chinese education system doesn’t encourage you to express your own character. They feed you stale rules developed from books passed down over thousands of years. There’s not much opportunity for personal expression or thought; difference is discouraged.”

While American rappers like Eminem and Q-Tip have been popular in China since the 1990s, home-grown rap didn’t start gaining momentum until a decade later. The group Yin Ts’ang (its name means “hidden”), one of the pioneers of Chinese rap, is made up of global nomads: a Beijinger, a Chinese-Canadian and two Americans.

Kanyes thoughts on 50 dissing him...

From Bossip

for me as a fan of him I felt like if he said something negative and tried to make it like I’m negative it’s almost like if a little kid walks up to you at the airport and is like, ‘Man, I love you so much,” and then you spit on him it’s like (in a joking voice) “I don’t know if I love you as much as I used to,” as you wipe the spit off your face, but you still play their music. I could never have beef with anybody. I’m not here to beef with anybody. I’m trying to bring people together. I realize that my success and my mouth and everything rub people the wrong way every now and then, but I’m not finna have beef with anybody. I really walk around by myself

So Did 50 Cent Win A Round 2 Against Kanye West?

50 Disses Kanye and Oprah

From realtalkny

50 would start beef with his grandmother to sell records.

“In usual 50 Cent fashion, the rapper has once again decided to pick a fight. This week, 50 Cent has decided to go after Oprah again. In an exclusive interview while backstage at 106 & Park last Thursday, 50 said, “Oprah’s great. I just think the only misconception is that she’s a Black woman. They say Oprah Winfrey’s a Black woman, but she’s [been] catering to a demographic of a middle-aged White woman for so long that I believe she’s a middle-aged White woman.”

“Oprah will have a rapist on her show and have a discussion about why they do it, but won’t have a rags to riches story on her show,” 50 said. He went on to even throw rapper/producer Kanye West in the fire. “She’ll have Kanye West on her show. I think middle America would rather have they kids be gay, than have them aggressive.”

Phonte not feeling Kanyes latest album

From Baller Status

"I personally did not like the album. I thought it was ... I honestly thought it was an act of cowardice. I just think that if you're gonna make the creative leaps to sing, then really sing. Let your voice come out, and let people hear all the idiosyncrasies in your voice because that's what makes you uniquely you," Phonte continued
